The Nation’s Capital will be riding the classic snow/mix/rain line on Wednesday. This will be a BIG snowstorm just 30 to 40 miles WEST of Washington, D.C., but snow will likely mix with sleet and rain, to all rain Wednesday afternoon, before ending as a moderate to heavy burst of snow by Wednesday night.

Precipitation will quickly spread across Northern Virginia by late morning and early afternoon Wednesday. By 3:00 p.m., snow will changeover to rain across Fredericksburg and Southern Maryland, and slowly inch into the D.C. area by Wednesday evening. As the low intensifies off the Delmarva coast, very heavy snow is likely across the Northern and Central Shenandoah Valley and portions of the Northern Virginia Piedmont. Somewhere in between the rain and snow line, there will be a period of freezing rain and sleet with ice accumulations likely. It may be a very narrow band, but this could setup somewhere around the Culpeper and Warrenton area to near Charlottesville.
